How to read the new washer dryer energy label?

Energy labels for washing machines and washer dryers are changing. After 1 March 2021, all energy ratings will be listed from A to G rather than A+, A++, and A+++.

The new labels aim to reward energy-efficient appliances while implementing stricter eco-design requirements and improved environmental performance. The new regulations cover not only energy efficiency but also energy consumption in a way that consumers can relate to more easily.

The energy efficiency rating of washer dryers is based on the energy consumption of new “Eco 40- 60” programme and the “Wash and Dry” cycle. The “Eco 40-60” programme is recommended for normally-soiled, durable cotton and linen laundry with care labels declaring the wash temperature between 40 °C and 60 °C.

Here is what the new washer dryer energy label looks like and what the symbols and numbers stand for:

  1. QR code (New)
  2. Scale of energy efficiency classes (A-G)
  3. a) Energy efficiency class of the "Wash and Dry" cycle
    b) Energy efficiency class of the "Eco 40-60" programme
  4. Weighted energy consumption of the "Wash and Dry" cycle in kWh per 100 cycles (New)
  5. Weighted energy consumption of the "Eco 40-60" programme in kWh per 100 cycles (New)
  6. a) Rated capacity for the "Wash and Dry" cycle in kg
    b) Rated capacity for the "Eco 40-60" programme in kg
  7. a) Weighted water consumption of the "Wash and Dry" cycle in litres per cycle (New)
    b) Weighted water consumption of the "Eco 40-60" programme in litres per cycle (New)
  8. a) Duration of the "Wash and Dry" cycle at rated capacity (New)
    b) Duration of the washing cycle at rated capacity (New)
  9. Spin efficiency class (New)
  10. Noise level during spin cycle in dBA and noise emission class (New)

The ‘Eco 40-60’ programme is the basis to determine energy consumption, water consumption, washing, residual dampness, noise, programme duration, in addition to spinning and rinsing efficiency.

For the calculation of consumption values, quarter, half and full loads values are taken into consideration.
