About The Designer

MaryJo Camp is the owner of DesignCamp, RLLP, a Kitchen and Bath Design Experience in Denver, North Carolina. Driven by the philosophy that purposeful design improves lives, MaryJo has built her career by providing expertise for clients to live and work well.

Design Statement

Overview

This kitchen serves the needs of an active family who cooks together to enhance their lifestyle choices to be healthy, both emotionally and physically. They enjoy taking the effort to prepare nutritious, tasteful meals. It is a family project to compost, recycle, keep a garden and preserve abundance by canning their seasonal bounty. They love the outdoors and their local weather allows for outdoor activity most of the year.

Flexibility

Opening Glass Wall –


The kitchen doesn’t just relate to the outdoor deck it becomes one with it. The sink peninsula has seating on the deck side so that when the wall is open, the deck and kitchen are one space.

Walk-in Pantry -


A walk-in pantry that houses an additional freezer and shelves for home canned goods and other necessities, also has space for a utility closet and rolling cart to make access easier.

Location of Beverage Center -


Serves both the inside and outside space easily for anything liquid, including smoothies, without interfering with meal preparation. Also close enough that access during meal prep is easy.

Lighting –


Layered lighting that can be used together or each separately as needed. The articulating lighting at the peninsula can be adjusted to position where needed.

Copper Trough Sink in Peninsula -


Designed to be used to grow herbs to have fresh at hand whether cooking inside or BBQing on the deck. The drain allows it to be used as a fun access at parties for drinks.

Work Stations

The sink peninsula offers plenty of counterspace for prepping and cleanup, taking into account the need for recycling to the right of the sink composting in a rollout below the sink. The dishwasher close at hand saves water and makes cleanup a snap. On the island behind the sink, there are deep drawer fitted with inserts for the storage of flatware, glasses and dishes. The open baskets store onions and potatoes that need air circulation. A Pullout for oils and vinegars and even a bar to air a dishtowel are also included. The additional counterspace and 48” wide aisle make it easy to work together.

The cooktop and ovens enjoy plenty of counterspace including that on the island behind. This L-shaped island houses a MW drawer for convenience and offers lots of counterspace for cooking activities and storage for pots and pans and utensils. Vertical dividers in the deep drawer below the ovens house baking pans and above store cookie sheets and serving trays.

The banquette and kitchen table make family time comfortable. It’s a great place for homework and dining with the family sharing experiences together.

The stack washer/dryer close to the kitchen in a mud room off the garage allow for dirty garden clothes to be laundered. The durable butcherblock top and copper sink offer a great place for repotting and cleaning up. The clothes rod is perfect for hanging clothes to dry.

Equipment

Of course, the Beko Appliances were chosen for their efficiency in keeping food fresh, easy of food preparation and cleanup. The placement enhances the family’s activities, making it fun to cook together. Induction cooktops are a cleaner cooking source and having a wall and wall hood directs any dirt or moisture out of the room.

Copper sinks are naturally anti-microbial and smart touch faucets enhance cleanliness.

Materials

The material combination is designed for calm. The biophilic wallpaper and beadboard tile splash in the laundry room offer some comfort from the past while the quartz countertops and simple doorstyles bring modern convenience. The combination of natural wood and soft green cabinets, combined with white countertops and trim give a natural light ambiance. Copper and gold give spark to the room.

Texture found in the lamps made of recycled packing material (over the island) and easy to clean faux shagreen upholstery soften the space. Materials were chosen to support the family’s efforts to live conscientiously and thoughtfully on the earth.

Conclusion

The family space is designed to be flexible and comfortable for multiple activities for which the space is used. The focus on outdoors is enhanced by the colors and materials chosen with a nod to heritage. Ease of use and mental health go hand-in-hand in this indoor/outdoor space designed for many ages.
