Meet the Wanns

Mike and Tara Wann worked for over 10 years searching out the world’s most sustainable products and incorporated them into their new custom-built home. The home is designed to produce at least as much power from renewable onsite resources as it consumes, as well as be an inspiration for others to see how accessible Net Zero living can actually be.

Mike and Tara’s steps to more sustainable living

There are many, many different ways to get to a more sustainable home. They all tend to fall under one of these three main categories:

Architecture

Architecture

When building a new structure, utilize the natural elements of the property such as subterranean levels, capturing natural wind flow and following the path of the sun to help minimize energy use.

Energy Efficiency

Energy Efficiency

Everything that goes into the infrastructure of the home, from the HVAC system to the lighting, from solar solutions to double-pane windows and more, all have the potential to provide huge energy savings.

Appliances

Appliances

Kitchen appliances are one of the biggest users of energy in a home. Select appliances that offer top performance while utilizing the least amount of energy.

This family loves to cook. And help save the planet.

Beko’s innovative products help preserve produce longer, utilize less water and contain components made from recycled materials, which were all important to the Wanns. And because of how energy efficient the appliances are, the Wanns were able to build two complete kitchens and still retain a Net Zero energy footprint for their home.

The Family Kitchen

This is where the action takes place, and where the entire family gathers to prepare meals together. The space is relaxed and built around a central island where so much more takes place than just eating.

The Chef’s Kitchen

The Wann home is a multi-generational one, and Mike’s parents live on the first floor. Mike’s father is a retired chef, and this kitchen is configured in a line-style format similar to a restaurant. In addition to his parents use, this kitchen will also be used for more formal entertaining and larger, more elaborate meals.
