The last school bell about to ring

The end of term means a change in routine for every family. There’s more time to relax in the mornings and the kitchen gets busier. The freezer can help you avoid the holiday chaos. A little preparation with your freezer will give you more time for family.

The following 6 school holiday freezer meal prep tips are quick and will give you more time for family.

6 school holiday freezer meal prep tips

1.         Take 10 minutes to reorganize your freezer so you have more time later

A little reorganizing goes a long way. Take time to group similar items together, remove unused items to create space, and set zones for meals, snacks, and sides. Keeping a marker and labels in the drawer means that new items can be dated and labeled.

•           Top shelf: meals that are ready to heat up

•           Middle shelf: lunch bits and sides

•           Door or top tray: snacks and ice

2.         Pack the winners in flat packs.

Select two sauces and one protein base. Options are tomato pasta sauce, veggie chili, or taco mince. Cool it down and then freeze it in bags. The thinner the bag, the easier it is to stack and thaw for a quick dinner. The Food Standards Agency suggests cooling down food, freezing it before a use-by date, and defrosting it in the fridge, not the counter.* Food Standards Agency guidance

•           Portion each meal into its own bag before freezing

•           Label each bag with the name of the meal, date, and number of servings

•           Lay flat on a tray to freeze, and then store them vertically like books

3.         Create a snack stash ready to grab and go

Snacks keep kids occupied between activities. Set aside some muffin halves, bagels (toasted or un-toasted), cheese scones, and prepared smoothie packs. To make frozen smoothie packs, place berries and banana coins on a tray. Once they are frozen, you can dump them into bags of the kids’ choosing. A small crate labelled “Snacks” will keep kids from opening the door to rummage through your stash of snacks.

•           Smoothie packs with fruit (and spinach if desired) ready to blend

•           Savoury bakes: the cooked ones are ready to reheat, and the frozen ones are also ready to reheat

•           Yoghurt tubes, frozen ones can be used as lunchbox coolers

4.         Weeknight first aid is in the freezer

Pre-marinate proteins before freezing. This will give you flavour without any work on the day of cooking. Bag chicken thighs with yogurt and spices, salmon with lemon and dill, or tofu with soy/ginger/garlic blend. Just remember to squeeze the air out, seal, label, and freeze. Thaw in the fridge overnight, and you’re ready to cook right away.

When loading a large batch into your freezer, take advantage of the Fast Freeze feature, if your model has it. It will lower the temperature of the food faster, helping you to stay on schedule. If you have done a large shop or cooked a meal in advance, many Beko freezers have a Fast Freeze feature to assist you.

•           Yoghurt + curry powder + lemon

•           Soy + honey + garlic + sesame oil

•           Olive oil + paprika + oregano + lemon zest

5.         Prepare freezer meals along with your side dishes

When your sides are ready, future dinners flow. Chop and blanch some vegetables and freeze them to use in a stir fry. For easy portioned servings, freeze rice, mashed potatoes, or cooked grains in muffin tins and then bag them. For quick and easy finishing touches on pasta and fish, you can freeze coins of herb butter. To have instant meal fillers, add some flatbread or naan to the stack.

•           Broccoli and green beans that were frozen after being partially boiled

•           Rice, 2 scoops per bag

•           Herb butter, one coin per person

You can store frozen foods to use later in a Beko Frost Free freezer that prevents ice build‑up, so you keep usable space for these holiday batches. That means less chipping, more cooking.

6.         Prepare for picnics and temperature swings

Keep ice packs and frozen juice boxes ready for outings to the park. When holiday plans move fast, freeze sandwich fillings like pulled chicken or roasted vegetables and thaw them in the fridge overnight. Assemble the sandwiches in the morning. For quick cooling, set up an ice tray near the front so kids can help fill bottles before heading out.

Beko makes freezer usage easier with a few smart features. The Ice Bank Tray is a clean way to make and store ice, and if your freezer has FreezerGuard, it is designed to keep working in outbuildings. The FreezerGuard will work even when temperatures drop to −15°C, so always check your model’s handbook if you keep a freezer in the garage.

Freezer Meal Prep

Before the break, here are a few tips to prepare your freezer.

•           Map out a 7-day plan for lunches and dinners that includes freezer-friendly meals.

•           Prepare two sauces, one protein base, and two sides for quick meals.

•           Prepare a labelled snack crate that the kids can reach.

•           Put a pen, some labels, and clips in the freezer drawer so you can label the food.

•           If your freezer has a Fast Freeze feature, turn it on before you load the food in.

Safety First

•           Freeze food that has been cooked as soon as it has cooled, don’t wait days to freeze it.

•           To defrost food, place it in the fridge, but cook it within 24 hours.

•           Food should reheat to steaming hot all the way through.

•           When in doubt, check official guidance from the Food Standards Agency FSA chilling and freezing.
